Historic Mangels Shooting Gallery Returning to Coney Island!

Ok, this is cool…

An iconic 1940s era Mangels shooting gallery is returning to Coney! Last night Mayor of Coney Island Dick Zigun tweeted the news that the shooting gallery, which had been located under the Wonder Wheel and maintained in storage by Wonder Wheel Park’s Vourderis family, has been restored and will be moving to Surf Avenue to front Coney Island USA’s new art & culture gallery. The gallery will take over the former location of Denny’s Ice Cream which was sadly destroyed by Hurricane Sandy last fall.

What caught my eye was mention that the targets of this particular shooting gallery have a World War 2 theme with paratroopers, soldiers and torpedo boats. Readers of The Wonder City may know that recreating war-era Coney Island was this illustrator’s favorite part of the job!

William F. Mangels was a machinist and thrill ride inventor–The Whip and the Tickler!–whose Coney Island shop repaired games and rides from the early 1900s until 1969.

He also held a ton of patents on cast-iron targets for shooting galleries. Collectors are willing to drop quite a bit of cash to acquire these targets when they come up for auction.

I can’t wait to play!
